Server move and upgrades

Hi,

We moved servers over the weekend, or rather my ISP moved mtheory onto a new server at pretty short notice. It doesn’t appear to have caused to many problems other than breaking mercurial. I’ve fixed this now and also upgraded WordPress to 3.0.1. I don’t think I mentioned the version 3 WordPress upgrade which added some new features and a lot of polish to WordPress. That went live quite a while ago now. If anyone has any problems with anything please get in touch and let me know.

New security certificate coming soon

Quite some time ago we enabled SSL support for email and webmail. This is a good thing as it dramatically improves security of your email and webmail access. Unfortunately this created a rather annoying problem with the security certificates. The security certificate was provided by the internet service provider and not us. As a result modern web browsers and email clients raise a warning message informing you that the certificate does not match the domain. This involved having to manually accept the certificate and is obviously a little off putting. In the last couple of months the cost of buying a security certificate has fallen massively and we will shortly implement a certificate for mtheory.co.uk. This should eliminate the warning messages raised by your email clients and web browsers.

However, when the switch happens (hopefully in the next week) your email client and web browser is likely to throw up a warning that the certificate has changed. You should be able to accept this and then things should work just fine from then on.

We will of course detail the transition here and if necessary add some support articles on the process.

Problems with email

Somehow I seem to have missed notification to changes of how the email servers are working. If you are having problems getting your email please check the following: your username for accessing your email should be your email address and not the old style usernamemt were username would be the part before @ in your email added. So for example if your email address was joebloggs@mtheory.co.uk you probably used the username joebloggsmt to access your email. Well it would appear that, that no longer works. Instead you now need to use joebloggs@mtheory.co.uk as your username. If you are having problems and can not work out how to change your settings please get in touch. Webmail continues to work fine, and I will update the guide on the support Wiki very soon.

I do apologise for this slip up, it clearly failed to register on my radar.

Changes to Junk mail filtering

We have changed the way junk mail is filtered on the server side on mtheory. These changes will hopefully help everyone to make better use of the server side junk mail filtering service. A detail explanation of the changes is given below.
Previously any mail identified by the mail server as possibly being junk would be held in quarantine on the server. To access this email you had to log into the webmail and access the mail there. As part of changes and the upgrade to the new webmail client (Roundcube) this was moved to reside within the http://mailboxes.mtheory.co.uk panel. Ideally it would be nice if you could access this filtered email from anywhere, and that is what we have done!
So you should find that a new mail box called “Junk” has been added to your account (if you didn’t already have one). All mail identified as possibly being junk is now moved into the “Junk” folder. This will be visible on both your webmail and IMAP accounts. On your email client you may well need to refresh your list of folders from the server (in Mail on OS X this is done by selecting Mailbox-> Synchronize All Accounts in the menu bar). Once your “Junk” folder is visible you will also probably want to tell you email client to use this folder for junk email (again on Mail on OS X this is done by selecting the “Junk” folder in the left pane and then going to the menu bar and selecting Mailbox->Use This Mailbox For->Junk Mail it should now change icon from a blue folder to a brown mailbag with some letters coming out). If the server side filters are not catching enough of your junk email you can decrease the tag level as well as white listing and black listing addresses by visiting http://mailboxes.mtheory.co.uk/ and configuring it further from there.
If you don’t like the changes and would prefer to go back to the old system you can also do this from http://mailboxes.mtheory.co.uk/.

Main webpage restored

An attempted upgrade to some of the back-end systems two days ago left the main webpage out of order. This has finally been fixed, I took the time to iron out a couple of other bugs that I’d been ignoring for about a year. So everything should be working again. Of course the upgrade still needs performed and I’ll work out what went wrong and perform that at a later date.

WordPress upgraded

Hey ho,

Yet another WordPress upgrade, fairly large one this time to 2.7 and another shinny new interface. I think they are definitely making things better.. See http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_2.7 for details of the update though I think you’ll notice them the first time you log-in.
